Meet Dr. Robert H. Marmer

Dr. Robert H. Marmer, M.D. was born and raised in Cincinnati, OH. He obtained his undergraduate degree at Ohio State University. His medical degree was granted with honors from el Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara in Mexico. After Dr. Marmer completed his internship in Houston, TX, he practiced Family Medicine in San Diego, CA. Following his Ophthalmology residency program at the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Marmer spent time as a Professor of Ophthalmology, lecturing students at Ahmadubello University in Kaduna and Zaria, Nigeria. In 1975, Dr. Marmer began his private practice Marmer Medical Eye Center PC in Atlanta, GA.

Dr. Marmer prides himself on being at the leading edge of technology. He faithfully followed the progress of the refractive surgery technique that was changing the lives of millions of nearsighted people. Dr. Marmer was among the first of US physicians to travel to Russia to learn about the procedure from world-renowned surgeon Dr. Svyatoslav Fyodorov, who was instrumental in perfecting Radical Keratotomy (RK) surgery. Dr. Marmer was the first surgeon to introduce and perform RK surgery in Georgia. Since his first RK surgery in 1979, Dr. Marmer has performed over 30,000 refractive surgeries. Dr. Marmer has also successfully performed many Lasik and PRK (Laser Refractive Surgery) procedures.

Notable Procedures Offered by Dr. Marmer, M.D.

  • He is one of only two Ophthalmologists in the United States trained to perform Hyperopic Thermal Keratoplasty for farsightedness, potentially eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses for virtually every refractive disorder.
  • He is one of the few ophthalmologists trained in the surgical reversal of Presbyopia, eliminating the need for reading glasses.
  • He is the only ophthalmologist in the US to provide ozone therapy for the treatment of Retinitis Pigmentosa.

Dr. Marmer has been a medical advisor and on the board of The Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of Georgia. He is the past president of the Retinitis Pigmentosa Foundation (Atlanta Affiliate) and board member of the Foundation Fighting Blindness. He has a faculty appointment as Clinical Professor of Surgery at Morehouse School of Medicine, Atlanta, GA. Dr. Marmer has had the privilege of being the official team Ophthalmologist for the NBA Atlanta Hawks for over 35 years and was also selected as the IHL Atlanta Knights and the ABL Atlanta Glory team Ophthalmologist. He was selected as the ophthalmologist for the 1996 Olympics and the 2001 Maccabi Games held in Atlanta, Georgia. He is also associated with the following organizations:
